Snapshots of Arkansas - a new year, a new life!

January 12, 2015

The wife and I have settled in a bit now, time for a little recap! We've been gone for long enough, hopefully y'all miss our smiling faces at least a little :)

Now that we've got internet, and I've got my computer set up, I can finally get at all my pictures! So expect some photo-heavy posts in the near future. I can crank out a thousand words, but pictures are more concise.

We spent New Years Eve at our parents' place, in Texarkana. I'm not sure if the pictures of Texarkana are *all* from around New Years, but I'll pretend they all were-

Here's one of the two giant dogs down there, down for the count because he was on the trampoline too much (totally serious, he's up there all the time!)

Jen and her shiny gold dress from New Years :) we just hung out with the family, and had a blast! But, we also decided to get dressed up anyway!

On our way out, both dogs had run off down the road. We found them by chance and I hollered out the window to them so they would follow us back to the house. They did really well following!

 ...Mostly
 But, we got 'em home!

One of our first pictures of our new home, this is the downtown Little Rock skyline, from one of the bridges to North Little Rock (which I'm told is its own separate town, despite the name)

This is the freeway from Conway (where we were staying with our buddy Jay!) on the way down to do more house shopping.

Job hunting, while stressful, does have its perks - if you don't have anything going on, you can really look to switch up what you're doing! I've been looking at mostly serious lab work, but part-time things like this gig are hard to resist :)
Unfortunately, this one was filled before I applied (I'm shocked), but it was worth a shot.
I think, though, that I have a job coming! More on that later.

This is the last shot of the inside of our storage unit, before we emptied it out! It was good to have this, however stressful.
When we first came to town, we were planning on straight-up buying a house. It sounded like a good plan before we'd left, but once we got there, we spent over a week just driving around, driving each other crazy looking at houses and neighborhoods.
In the end, we decided to rent for a while first. Which was definitely the right choice, especially considering the apartment we wound up in!
 And speaking of:

This is the view out of one of our many kitchen windows. Our "apartment" is really the entire top floor of a wonderful old Victorian house (much like the one in the background up there). It is one cool place!

Link, ever a window cat, is very pleased :D

Until we've started hanging things up, the mantle has become something of a catch-all for all of our different hangables. It's kind of growing on us!

Zelda is adjusting nicely, here she is being extra lady-like

But what sorcery is this?! Frost on the windows?! It's the end of the woooooorld!
The weather is an adjustment, although everyone we meet has told us this is unusually bad. But, it was pretty nice when we first got here, and we're hopeful that it'll get better soon!

On that note, our succulents - after surviving the long drive here - are less than pleased. They look really good here, but that's because they're actually frozen solid (!!) time will tell how many survive that. Up to that afternoon I'd been excited about how good they looked from inside, it never occurred to me that they were popsicles!

Jen, in our new dining room. We had to leave most of our chairs behind, but since this picture was taken we've picked up a few more.

It's funny how in this day and age, home just isn't home without internet - here's our new modem/router mid setup! I was alarmed to find that I had to plug this in with an ethernet cable to set it up. Unfortunately, Jen's Macbook doesn't have an ethernet port, and my monster was already setup rooms away.
Good thing I happen to have a hilariously long ethernet cable :D start above-

Room number two, with the chair making sure I don't pull over the modem (note this decidedly pink walls. Can't have everything...)

Room number three - it's hard to see how far that is, but these rooms are biiiig!

And room three. Huzzah! It made it!!

Our victory dance was breaking out Peaky Blinders on Netflix - a show Jay got us really into that we'd been hankering to see more of.
We've also been exploring town a bit-

See that bridge in the distance? It does all the way across the river over the dam.
Looking at it, my first thought was:
 "Wow! That's a...
 Well, that's a...

  "Exactly!"

She looks happy, nothing dampens that gorgeous smile :)
But it was COLD on that their bridge!

So SO cold, we didn't even make it onto the bridge proper, there was an icy breeze a-blowin', and it turned us right around

We settled for the dog park sheltered behind the bridge. Which, despite this being the only picture I took, was a great idea!

Here's a cool restaurant/bar called South on Main. It's one of the town's hotspots, and right up the street from our apartment!

In light of the cold, I've been shopping for thick, thick warm coats. I really loved this one, but it was two sizes too big, and the only one there :(

Apropos of nothing, Colonel Sanders says "AAAAH MY ARM!!"

We'll close with this one, another foot bridge - and again, we turned back before we made it half way. Too cold!

That's all for this post, more to come!

  1. Noah! Ok, I am let in at last, some prime working time expended. I had to be sharp enough to retype arkansifornian many times . "That Thar Bridge" is more politely spelled that there, not their, but thanks for showing it. It will be fun on that perfect spring day with the river in flood. Especially for you, brought up in dry country. Is your internet wireless once set up? Link and Zelda will love that cable. Keep up the posts
