Day 4: Mountains, Gandalf!

December 21, 2014

 Woo! What a day!

We started this morning in Glenwood Springs, but then did a tour down I-70 to visit a number of the small mountain towns along the way. First up was Georgetown, an amazing little old fashioned downtown that we went to to check it out, but also to visit Jen's favorite candy shop. Next up was a much larger and more sprawling, and more modern, Idaho Springs - we went there for soap!
Even with the young crowds and trendy places, each of those downtowns felt like stepping back in time, back into an age when railroads were the lifeblood of the frontier, and everything was built out of cobblestone and brick.

We hit snow during this part, gnarly snow. Where the Sierras had barely slowed us down, deep in the Rockies it was touch and go for a while there. Luckily, the snow flurries were brief and less than serious, and it didn't get quite cold enough for the roads to completely ice over. Still, driving a truck in the dark through the snow was quite an experience.

And then, after all that, we crested a last hill and saw the endless sea of land-bound stars that is Denver. It's enormous! Especially after having spent the past few days in narrow valleys and towns whose entire center was an old-style general store and half a gas station.

Denver presented a whole new set of challenges, with the U-haul and so many choices of where to go. In the end, we found a La Quinta inn that was happy to host us and our wayward pets. After a wonderful dinner at a place called Work & Class, we're more than ready for bed.

The fun part is over. Tomorrow we hit the road and hit it hard. The goal is to get within a few hours of Little Rock by tomorrow night, and that's going to mean driving 8 - 10 hours tomorrow. Kansas is the first state we're going to that I've never been through before, so I'm curious to see it from the road.

 A full report to follow!
